Spotlight on Pike Dog Wellness

Pike Dog Wellness (PDW) has been deeply committed to the mushing community for over two decades, with its roots tracing back to when David Pike first sponsored Iditarod musher Bruce Lee in 2000.

A Personal Beginning

David’s journey into the world of dog mushing began in 1999, sparked by a visit to Alaska encouraged by Bruce’s Parents—Headie and Wilma Lee, his then-neighbors in Kentucky. While in Denali, David made a fateful call to Bruce, who invited him to visit his kennel in Carlo Creek. That visit marked the beginning of a lifelong passion. As David often says, “That call to Bruce Lee was the most expensive phone call I’ve ever made!”

Following that first race sponsorship in 2000, PDW and Bruce Lee launched an innovative educational exchange connecting Nikolai Elementary School in Alaska with a Kentucky elementary school. The program featured monthly VHS video updates from Bruce and Jeralyn Lee, along with live classroom calls, giving Kentucky students a unique window into the Iditarod. In many ways, this effort helped spark the media career of Bruce Lee, who is now a legendary Iditarod Insider commentator.

Since that first partnership, PDW has proudly supported a number of mushers including: Aaron Burmeister, Anne Capistrant, Sven Haltmann, Sebastian Schnuelle, Nic Petit, and Ryan Redington.

Responding to Crisis:

The Birth of PDW

In 2020, in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic—particularly its financial impact on mushers and kennels—Pike Dog Wellness was formally established.

One of its first major initiatives was a direct-action program that donated $50,000 in veterinary support by offering a $500 reimbursement to the first 50 Iditarod teams to sign up for both the 2021 and 2022 races. This provided vital relief during a time of widespread uncertainty, rising costs, and diminished tourism revenue for Alaska-based mushers. The program was met with enthusiastic appreciation.

Today, PDW continues its mission to:

Pike Dog Wellness is the proud sponsor of:

David Pike: A chance meeting leads to a lifetime of adventure

This may be your first introduction to David Pike, but if you’ve ever listened to the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod, you’ve certainly heard his smooth voice counting down each musher at the Anchorage starting line as the King of Countdown — 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… GO!

Serving as the countdown announcer and timer for the Anchorage Ceremonial Start may be his most recognizable claim to fame among Iditarod fans, but it’s his work as the Managing Owner of Pike Legal Group, PLLC, a seven-attorney firm based near Louisville, Kentucky, that is the true cornerstone of his career.

David brings that same dedication and spirit of service to Pike Dog Wellness, working to champion the health, welfare, and legacy of Alaska’s sled dogs, and to ensuring the traditions, stories, and trail mail they carry continue for generations to come.

His law practice spans real estate, telecommunications, environmental law, zoning, and land use litigation, and he is licensed to practice in eight states, twelve U.S. District Courts, four U.S. Courts of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. David holds a B.A. from DePauw University, and J.D./M.B.A. degrees from the University of Illinois.

Beyond law, David is a passionate advocate for:

He has delivered over 1,000 volunteer seminars nationwide and received numerous awards including: Outstanding Contributions to Planning Award from Kentucky Chapter, American Planning Association, Above & Beyond Educator of the Year – Kentucky League of Cities and a Special Appreciation Award for legislative leadership on planning education.

He is also a proud sponsor and life member of several organizations, including: Alaska Dog Mushers Association, National Parks Conservation Association, The Trumpeter Swan Society, Friends of Alaska National Wildlife Refuges and the Iditarod Trail Committee.

David has completed cold-weather survival training with the Northwest School of Survival on Mt. Hood, Oregon and continues to be hands-on in the mushing community.

He was honored as one of the first inductees into the Bullitt Central High School Hall of Fame, selected from more than 15,000 graduates. In his spare time, David enjoys travel, archaeology, skiing, camping, wildlife viewing, and collecting toy soldiers.
