Su Dog 300
The Su Dog 300 is a 300-mile sled dog race through Alaska’s Upper Susitna Valley, a region deeply rooted in mushing history and home to the beginning of the Iditarod Trail and countless sled dog kennels. Designed as both an Iditarod qualifier and a celebration of Alaska’s sled dog heritage, the race brings together mushers, dogs, volunteers, and fans to experience the beauty of the Susitna Valley and the magic of sled dogs doing what they were born to do.
The Su Dog 300 places a strong emphasis on cooperation, mentorship, education, and dog care. As a nonprofit, volunteer-driven event, the race does not offer a cash purse. Instead, finishers are recognized through prizes and gift cards awarded at the Closing Ceremonies, encouraging a culture that values sportsmanship, stewardship, and the bond between musher and dog team above competition alone.
Starting with the 2027 race season, Pike Dog Wellness is proud to sponsor the Pike Dog Wellness Veterinarians Choice Award for the Su Dog 300 and remains committed to supporting the award through 2030. Selected by the race’s veterinary team, this honor recognizes the musher and team demonstrating exemplary dog care, wellness stewardship, and veterinary partnership throughout the race.
The recipient receives a custom-designed commemorative award along with an annual non-monetary prize package provided by Pike Dog Wellness. The award celebrates the preparation, attentiveness, and compassion required to maintain exceptional canine health and well-being throughout the challenges of a 300-mile race.
As part of Pike Dog Wellness’s partnership with the Anchorage Mushing District, recipients are further recognized through cast bronze commemorative discs installed along historic Fourth Avenue. Iditarod® Trail Sled Dog Race
Where the Trail Begins: Honoring Canine Care on the Iditarod®
Each March, the Iditarod® kicks off with a ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage, launching mushers and their teams on a legendary 1,000-mile journey to Nome. Departing in two-minute intervals, each musher brings a unique strategy, training philosophy, and unshakable bond with their dogs. While the race is guided by rules, the true story unfolds on the trail—where grit, endurance, and heart lead the way.
Among the most prestigious honors on this journey is the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award. Selected by a panel of race veterinarians, this award recognizes a musher who demonstrates outstanding dog care while remaining competitive—an achievement that, for many, holds more meaning than crossing the finish line first.
Athletes are evaluated on hydration, nutrition, gait, body condition, and overall attitude—criteria that reflect the highest standards of canine wellness. This award not only highlights exceptional mushing but elevates the core value of the sport: caring for the dogs who make the race possible.
Through Pike Dog Wellness, David Pike has committed to sponsoring the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award through 2030, ensuring continued recognition of the mushers who exemplify exceptional canine care and stewardship.
The honoree receives a crystal trophy, a paid race entry, and a $1,000 cash prize presented at the Finishers Banquet. But the recognition does not end there. David personally visits the musher’s kennel during the off-season and hand-delivers a celebratory box of Alaskan King Crab—a heartfelt tribute to those who prioritize the health and happiness of their teams above all.
Recipients are also honored through the Anchorage Mushing District’s Fourth Avenue Trail of Champions. Cast bronze commemorative discs featuring a husky dog head, the Pike Dog Wellness logo, the race name, musher name, and year of recognition are installed along the historic Fourth Avenue corridor, creating a lasting public tribute to excellence in canine care, sportsmanship, and the enduring legacy of Alaska sled dog racing.
At its heart, the Iditarod® is not just a race—it is a story of partnership, perseverance, and purpose. The Pike Dog Wellness Humanitarian Award helps ensure that story continues to be told, honoring the mushers whose commitment to their dogs defines the very best of the sport.
