Iditarod® Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award presented by Pike Dog Wellness

Since 2023, Pike Dog Wellness (PDW) has proudly sponsored the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award—one of the Iditarod®’s most prestigious honors. First presented in 1982, this award recognizes the musher who demonstrates exceptional dog care while remaining competitive throughout the race. The Iditarod® veterinary team selects the recipient, who receives an engraved lead crystal trophy and complimentary entry into the following year’s race.

Looking ahead, David will take the stage at the upcoming Finisher’s Banquet in Nome to honor this year’s recipient in front of the Iditarod community.

PDW has made a commitment through 2030 to this coveted award, reflecting a deep and ongoing dedication to honoring the dogs, celebrating the care, and supporting mushers who put canine wellbeing at the heart of the sport.

Each Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award recipient will also be permanently recognized as part of the Anchorage Mushing District installation along Fourth Avenue at the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Recipients of the award will be commemorated on a dedicated plaque, featuring the race, musher name and year, creating a lasting tribute to the mushers whose commitment to outstanding canine care exemplifies the very best of the sport.

Together, these efforts ensure that the legacy of compassionate, exemplary dog care is celebrated not only each race season, but for generations to come.

Jr. Iditarod - Pike Dog Wellness Humanitarian Award

The Pike Dog Wellness Humanitarian Award recognizes Jr. Iditarod mushers who demonstrate exceptional dog care while maintaining a competitive team. Selected by the Jr. Iditarod veterinary team, this award celebrates young athletes who lead with responsibility, respect, and partnership with their dogs.

Beginning in 2026, Pike Dog Wellness committed to a five-year sponsorship of the award, supporting the next generation of mushers with a $2,000 scholarship and engraved trophy each year.

Recipients of the Jr. Iditarod – Pike Dog Wellness Humanitarian Award will also be permanently recognized as part of the Anchorage Mushing District installation along Fourth Avenue at the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Each winner will be commemorated on a dedicated plaque, creating a lasting tribute to the young mushers whose commitment to outstanding canine care reflects the future of the sport.

Through this award, Pike Dog Wellness is proud to honor young leaders who exemplify compassion, sportsmanship, and an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of their canine teammates.

Below, we proudly recognize the recipients who embody these values on the trail.

Su Dog 300 – Pike Dog Wellness Veterinarians Choice Award

Alaska Rural Veterinary Outreach (ARVO) – Sponsorship

Alaska Rural Veterinary Outreach provides critical veterinary care, education, and outreach services to communities across Alaska — improving access to care for working dogs, companion animals, and the people who rely on them in rural and remote regions of the state.

As part of its continued commitment to thoughtful, purpose-driven canine care, Pike Dog Wellness is proud to serve as a Sponsor of ARVO through 2030.

This partnership reflects a shared belief that veterinary access, education, and long-term wellness support are essential to healthy dogs, resilient communities, and the future of animal care across Alaska — particularly in areas where resources can be limited and working dogs remain an important part of daily life.

Through this multi-year sponsorship, Pike Dog Wellness helps support ARVO’s ongoing outreach efforts while elevating awareness around veterinary care, responsible dog stewardship, and overall canine wellness throughout the state.

Together, ARVO and Pike Dog Wellness are helping support healthier dogs, stronger communities, and the future of veterinary outreach across Alaska.

Mushing District

Pike Dog Wellness (PDW) is a proud Level Seven Sled Dog Sponsor of the Anchorage Mushing District. Through this sponsorship, PDW has earned the naming rights for one of the commemorative dogs on the Fourth Avenue Arch — a landmark tribute to Alaska’s rich dog mushing heritage and the enduring cultural significance of the sport. PDW’s sponsored dog will be named Zoner, a nod to the important work David Pike and Pike Legal do in zoning and land use law, and a meaningful connection between community, tradition, and trail.

Beginning in 2027, Pike Dog Wellness will expand that legacy by commemorating Humanitarian and Veterinarian Choice Award recipients with permanent plaques installed along Fourth Avenue in Anchorage’s Mushing District. Together, these tributes will bring the values of exceptional sled dog care into the public eye — creating a living, lasting honor for the mushers who lead with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to their teams.

Alaska SPCA

Pike Dog Wellness (PDW) is honored to be a committed sponsor through 2030 of the Alaska Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Alaska SPCA).  For more than 70 years, the Alaska SPCA has been dedicated to improving the lives of animals across the state — providing critical care, resources, and advocacy.

Unlike many assume, the Alaska SPCA is not affiliated with the national SPCA. It is an independent, stand-alone nonprofit, sustained entirely through donations.

Through its full-service veterinary hospital and compassionate staff, the Alaska SPCA provides:

Importantly, the Alaska SPCA is Musher Friendly — supporting Alaska’s sled dog community with accessible care and resources. Together, PDW and the Alaska SPCA are partnering to expand veterinary services for the mushing community, strengthening care for canine athletes both on and off the trail.

Major Contributor to Denali Park Kennels

Denali National Park Kennels hold a one-of-a-kind place within the National Park Service. As the only working sled dog kennel in the parks system, it introduces millions of visitors to the heritage of mushing each year — preserving a tradition that is deeply woven into Alaska’s history.

What many people don’t realize is that the Kennel benefits from philanthropic support to sustain its important mission. The National Park Service has established a dedicated fund to ensure these dogs — and the wilderness values they represent — remain an essential part of the Denali story.

Pike Dog Wellness and the Pike Family are proud to serve as major contributors to the Kennel. We invite everyone who believes in Alaska’s sled dogs and the spirit of the Last Frontier to join us. Filmmaker Ken Burns famously described the National Parks as “America’s Best Idea,” we wholeheartedly agree — and we’re committed to helping preserve this remarkable legacy for generations to come.

🐾 Yes, there’s a live Puppy Cam!

Because the magic of Denali’s sled dogs is something everyone should get to experience.

The Kennel honors Alaska Native traditions, protects access to wilderness, and brings history to life in a way that inspires millions.
Let’s keep this symbol of Alaska in harness — today and far into the future.

Copper Basin 300 – Pike Dog Wellness Veterinarians Choice Award

The Copper Basin 300 — often called “the toughest 300 miles in Alaska” — launches each January from Glennallen. Since 1990, this iconic race has challenged mushers and dogs with rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and the ultimate test of teamwork and endurance.

Pike Dog Wellness is proud to champion this historic event by sponsoring the Pike Dog Wellness Veterinarians Choice Award — presented to the team that demonstrates exemplary dog care throughout the race. The award includes a custom trophy and a $500 cash prize, honoring the partnership, preparation, and compassion that keep the dogs’ health and well-being at the forefront.

As part of Pike Dog Wellness’s broader commitment to preserving and celebrating Alaska’s mushing heritage, recipients of the Veterinarians Choice Award will also be recognized through the Anchorage Mushing District’s Fourth Avenue Trail of Champions. Cast bronze commemorative discs featuring a husky dog head, the Pike Dog Wellness logo, race name, musher name, and year of recognition are installed along the historic Fourth Avenue corridor. These permanent markers honor Pike Dog Wellness Humanitarian and Veterinarians Choice Award recipients from partner races across Alaska, creating a lasting tribute to excellence in canine care, sportsmanship, and stewardship of the sled dogs that make the sport possible.

Alongside this award, Pike Dog Wellness provides annual financial support to help ensure the Copper Basin 300 continues to thrive — a race that remains 100% volunteer-run and fueled by community, determination, and the enduring spirit of mushing.
