Congratulations to Sam McLain, rookie in the 2026 Copper Basin 300, on receiving the Pike Dog Wellness Veterinarian’s Choice Award.
Selected by the race veterinary team, this award recognizes outstanding dog care among the most competitive teams in the field. To be considered, mushers must finish in the top half of the field — reinforcing the award’s purpose: to honor exceptional canine care while also celebrating strong race performance.
Each veterinarian casts two votes, and according to Head Veterinarian Nina Hansen, that process is necessary because the level of care across the Copper Basin 300 is consistently so strong that ties are common.
Sam was presented with a $1,500 award along with Pike Dog Wellness merchandise, with David Pike on hand to personally present the honor.
A big congratulations to Sam on an impressive rookie run and this well-earned recognition for thoughtful, competitive dog care.
